Herzog Medical Centre’s Israel Centre for the Treatment of Psychotrauma (Metiv), promotes an Israeli society that cares for and empowers those affected by psychological trauma. Through evidence-based interventions, training, and research, Metiv provides quality services to communities and individuals before, during, and after trauma. Metiv, which is an affiliate of Jerusalem’s Herzog Medical Centre, was founded in 1989 by Dr. Danny Brom. Metiv has since become a world-renowned innovator in the research and treatment of trauma.
Throughout the course of the organization’s growth and development, Metiv has initiated programmes that have had a national and global impact. For example, Metiv’s National School Resilience Project, in coordination with the Israel Ministry of Education, provided resilience-building training for over 5,000 educators and developed a protocol, screening tools, and treatment programmes for nearly 50,000 children.
Especially, since the beginning of the current War, Herzog’s Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma (Metiv) has provided attending mental health care professionals with the tools and knowledge they need to be able to treat victims’ trauma and PTSD through its “Helping the Helpers programme”. The programme even assists therapists deal with challenging cases they are treating. To date, some 3,000 therapists have been trained and thousands more are waiting to receive assistance with the list growing every day.
As well, Metiv’s Peace of Mind (POM) programme was established to help demobilized Israeli combat soldiers effectively transition into civilian life. Over a period of nine-months, groups of discharged soldiers – who served together in the same platoon – are sent to POM participating Jewish communities around the world. There they can continue their healing process together with the love and support of host families. More than 2,150 former soldiers have been helped over the last 14 years with 130 trips through the programme.
