The Department of Psychogeriatrics is a unique entity, the only one of its kind in Israel, and one of the few in the world.

It consists of two departments. One, the Department of Neurogeriatrics, is home to a group of specialists in behavioural neurology. They are assisted by highly trained neuropsychologists and utilize Herzog Hospital's combined expertise in both geriatrics and psychiatry to diagnose and treat patients suffering from neurological diseases which affect the elderly. It has achieved an exceptional reputation for the accurate diagnosis and effective care of patients suffering from behavioural disorders and the early diagnosis of the dementias such as Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia, as well as Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders.

In many cases, towards the end of the course of these diseases, patients cannot be cared for at home; Herzog cares for such patients with great compassion and tenderness in a second department, the Department of psychogeriatrics. Here patients can remain, if need be, for extended periods of time, whilst receiving full medical care from the staff.

The Department is frequently involved in novel therapy projects addressing the needs of patients. These are held in collaboration with major companies and the Medical School, all carefully supervised by an independent Institutional Review board accredited by the Ministry of Health and operating within the criteria of the Helsinki Agreement on Human Experimentation.
