Medical Aspects of Rehabilitation
Geriatric doctors regularly check patients in the Rehabilitation Department, our policy being not only to solve the specific problem which brought the patient into the Hospital but also to take care of his general health. In this way, we try to stop the ‘revolving door syndrome’ so common in other hospitals, whereby a patient returns to the hospital shortly after his release due to other untreated problems.
Nursing Services
The nursing staff sees the patient’s general health and independence as the most important part of their work in the Rehabilitation Department. The nurses’ daily duties are combined with those of the multi-disciplinary medical staff to promote the health and quality of life of both the patient and his family. The nurses endeavor to assist the patient in overcoming his handicaps and to offer physical, emotional and social support. For example, when a patient has been trained to walk with a walker, a nurse will help him move around the Department with it, thus practicing the skill he has just learned in physiotherapy and helping him to function more independently at home.
Physiotherapy
The physiotherapy staff comprises a team of highly qualified therapists working in the various departments, particularly Geriatric Rehabilitation.
Most patients arrive in wheelchairs and undergo an advanced process of rehabilitation. They are treated by our trained staff with the aim of returning the patient to his former level of functioning and quality of life after about one month. In an area where a patient can no longer function, the staff instructs the patient and his family in ways to deal with this. The physiotherapists work with advanced equipment and up-to-date methods of treatment. Lately, an electric stair system has been provided to help patients go up and down stairs of varying degrees of difficulty. In addition, special beds enable the patient to practice getting in and out unaided, while other tools help him with daily tasks such as personal hygiene.
The patient and his needs are always at the forefront of our work in order to help him regain his place as a functioning member of society.
Occupational Therapy
Each patient undergoing geriatric rehabilitation participates in occupational therapy sessions. The sessions include an overall diagnosis of the areas on which to focus: improvement in daily functioning, in speech or in swallowing, adaptation to various tools, definition and treatment of cognitive problems, plus consultation with the patient and his family before returning home. The Department enjoys the benefits of modern equipment, wide experience and extensive knowledge in the treatment of geriatric patients. Therapy involves practicing important daily activities such as cooking, bathing, laundry etc. The professional staff of therapists is also available to help the patient, even after he is discharged, to regain his former ability to function and to improve his quality of life, without losing sight of the special needs of an older person.
