HERZOG’S AMERICAN FRIENDS
Though its profile in the United States may be low, Herzog Hospital in Jerusalem has a deserved reputation of being a world-class medical and research facility.
Since its creation 108 years ago, Herzog’s primary goal has been mental health, specializing in Community Mental Health and Depression, although since the beginning of the latest ‘intifada’, the hospital has gained renown for its work with sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Part of the accolades can be attributed to Metiv, Israel’s only free walk-in clinic for victims of terror.
Dr. Yehezkel Caine is currently director general of Herzog Hospital which, thanks to his leadership, has grown beyond the boundaries of Jerusalem’s Old City, where it was founded, into a 340-bed facility in Givat Shaul, in the outskirts of Jerusalem. Prior to his tenure at Herzog, Caine served in the Israeli Air Force where, for 20 years, in addition to administrative posts, he flew F-16s as a combat pilot. Caine was also largely responsible for Anthony Berkowitz being inspired enough about Herzog to become president of American Friends of Herzog Hospital. Berkowitz found tremendous worth in Herzog, now the third largest hospital in Jerusalem, and its American fund-raising arm in dire financial trouble.

Three months ago, the board of directors of the American Friends of Herzog hired Shari Fleschner-Albert as director of the fund-raising organization, signifying a new push toward fund-raising in the United States.
As part of the American Friends of Herzog Hospital’s newly enthusiastic administration, Dr. Shai Shoham, internationally renowned brain surgeon and head of the Brain Anatomy and Histopathology laboratory at Herzog, will speak on
January 27 at a cocktail reception at the New York Academy of Sciences. His subject will be “How your diet can help prevent and treat Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases”. Dr. Shoham is also scheduled to conduct a lecture at the home of Dr. Sally Olshin in Great Neck on January 29.
The offices of American Friends of Herzog Hospital are located at 15 East 26th Street, Suite 918, in Manhattan, and can be reached at (212) 683-3702 or by logging on to www.herzoghospital.org.
