Deja-Vu At Yamit and now Gush Katif
In 1985, Herzog psychiatrist & future Hospital Director General, Prof. Haim Dasberg and Chief Psychologist, Prof. Gaby Sheffler conducted a 3 year research project on the effects of the evacuation on the residents of Yamit. The study indicated denial, depression and traumatic stress among the residents.
Today, the same symptoms are being seen amongst the residents of Gush Katif in the Gaza Strip. The disengagement plan has triggered the same kinds of symptoms found in the Herzog Yamit study. And now, the staff of the Hospital’s Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma have been asked to provide counseling to the residents and their children being relocated, before and after the evacuation. Our staff are benefiting from the results of the previous Herzog research 20 years earlier.
